New border flight restriction raises questions for commercial drone operators

Federal agencies announced a year-long airspace restriction that bars unapproved drone flights up to 400 feet within one nautical mile of the U.S.-Mexico border. Operators who fly there regularly must request approval from Customs and Border Protection at least 48 hours in advance.

The listed approved missions include law enforcement, firefighting and search and rescue, but not commercial work such as surveys, inspections, agriculture or newsgathering. Industry representatives are asking for clearer criteria, standing approvals for frequent operators and a way to handle urgent missions. Always check for active flight restrictions before flying near the border.
