Cities turn to zoning as drone delivery expands

As delivery drones spread, local governments are using zoning to manage them. The FAA controls the airspace, but cities control land use, so they are focusing on where delivery hubs can be built and how they operate.

A proposed ordinance in Northglenn, Colorado, would require a special-use permit, restrict hubs to industrial zones, set operating hours, keep hubs at least 200 feet from homes and schools, and cap noise at the property line. Salem, Oregon, voted to study its options and asked the state for authority to set local rules for delivery drones.
