Every builder hits problems. The good news is that most DIY drone issues come from a short list of causes. Use this guide to work from symptom to fix.
Drone won’t arm
Check the arming flags in Betaflight’s Setup tab or the CLI status command. Common causes:
| Flag / cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Throttle not at zero | Lower throttle; check endpoints in the receiver tab |
| Not level / angle too high | Level the drone; recalibrate accelerometer |
| RX loss / failsafe | Check receiver binding and wiring |
| Arm switch already on at power-up | Toggle the switch off, then on |
| Connected to USB / configurator open | Disconnect and try with the battery only |
| Runaway takeoff prevention triggered | Check motor direction, props and orientation |
On ArduPilot, read the pre-arm messages in the ground station. They say exactly what’s wrong.
Flips or tumbles on takeoff
Almost always one of these:
- A motor spinning the wrong way.
- Motors connected in the wrong order.
- Props on the wrong motors or upside down.
- Flight controller orientation set incorrectly.
Check each with props off in the Motors tab. See Betaflight setup.
No video in goggles
- Confirm the VTX and goggles are on the same band and channel.
- Check camera wiring: video signal, power and ground.
- Check the VTX antenna is attached and undamaged.
- On digital systems, make sure the air unit and goggles are bound and on compatible firmware.
Video but no OSD
- Check the OSD is enabled and the video format (PAL/NTSC) matches.
- On digital systems, confirm MSP DisplayPort is set on the correct UART.
Receiver not working
- Check TX/RX wires are crossed: receiver TX to FC RX.
- Check Serial RX is enabled on the correct UART and the protocol is CRSF for ExpressLRS.
- Confirm the binding phrase and firmware versions match. See radio links.
Oscillation or shaking
- Replace damaged props.
- Tighten all frame screws.
- Check motor bearings and shafts.
- Lower PID master slider or check filtering. See PID tuning.
Hot motors
- Damaged props, too much D gain, poor filtering or a motor with damaged windings.
- Make sure motor pole count and bidirectional DShot are set correctly for RPM filtering.
Motor stutters or stops (desync)
- Check motor wires and solder joints.
- Check the motor for damage.
- Update ESC firmware; adjust ESC timing or rampup settings.
Short flight time
- Old or low-quality batteries.
- Too much weight.
- Props or motors mismatched to the build.
- Aggressive flying. See the LiPo guide.
GPS won’t lock
- Move the GPS away from the VTX.
- Check wiring and UART protocol.
- Give it time outdoors with a clear sky. See GPS modules.
A systematic approach
When you’re stuck, work through the system in order:
- Power: is the battery charged, connected and reading correctly?
- Radio: is the receiver bound and are channels moving?
- Flight controller: is orientation correct, and are arming flags clear?
- ESC and motors: do motors spin in the right order and direction?
- Props: right motor, right direction, undamaged?
- Video: channel, antenna, power?
Change one thing at a time and test after each change.
Getting help online
When asking for help in forums or groups, include:
- Your full parts list.
- Firmware versions.
- Your
diff alloutput from Betaflight. - A clear description and, if possible, a video of the problem.
- What you’ve already tried.
Good information gets good answers quickly.
Tools that make troubleshooting easier
| Tool | Use |
|---|---|
| Multimeter | Check voltages and continuity |
| Smoke stopper | Safe power-up after repairs |
| Blackbox logs | Find flight problems |
| Goggle DVR | Replay crashes |
| Spare known-good parts | Swap to isolate faults |
Prevent problems before they start
Most problems trace back to wiring, configuration or damaged parts. Clean building habits, a careful Betaflight setup and a pre-flight checklist prevent most of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't my FPV drone arm?
Check the arming flags in Betaflight. Common reasons are throttle not at zero, the drone not level, a receiver failsafe or the arm switch already on at power-up.
Why does my drone flip over when I take off?
Usually a motor spinning the wrong way, motors in the wrong order, props installed incorrectly or wrong flight controller orientation.
Why do my receiver channels not move in Betaflight?
The receiver’s TX and RX wires may not be crossed, Serial RX may be on the wrong UART, or the receiver may not be bound.
What causes motor desyncs?
Damaged motors or wires, poor solder joints, or ESC settings that don’t suit the motor. Updating ESC firmware often helps.
